The Anchor newspaper has remained Rhode Island College’s independent, student-run publication for close to 100 years. Yes, you read that right. The Anchor and its many generations of dedicated staff have been in operation since 1928. Despite being close to a century old, our mission has remained the same: to serve and represent RIC’s student body as a trustworthy news source. And now you have the opportunity to play a part in our long-running goal.
At The Anchor, community is our number one priority. Not only are we determined to cater to RIC’s student community but are actively working to house a little community of our own. Every Wednesday at noon in the Ducey Media Center a group of passionate, creative, hardworking students come together to make The Anchor newspaper possible. During these meetings, we discuss each week’s online publication, provide helpful writing critiques and brainstorm ways to improve. But above all, The Anchor provides a safe space for students to turn to when looking for an outlet or a supportive body.

Joining The Anchor is simple and begins with attending a meeting. There, interested students will learn about the ins and outs of professional writing and student journalism outside of a classroom. Via a hands-on approach, Anchor staff learn valuable job experience from working and collaborating with a team. Trust us, skills learned at The Anchor look great on a resume.
Entry-level students joining RIC’s student newspaper begin as staff writers: a paid position that only requires you to write about what you are interested in most. The Anchor is home to four versatile sections that writers can choose to write for each week.
News: where students cover heavy-hitting stories both on and off campus.
Opinions: the place for writers to share hot-takes and inspire change.
Arts & Entertainment: a multifaceted section full of creative writing, discussions about film and literature, video game reviews, pop-culture coverage and more.
Sports: coverage on RIC sports from recent game reviews to stories on talented campus athletes.
The Anchor is also designed for any committed student to move up the ranks. After spending time on our staff and gaining expertise in student journalism, staff writers have the opportunity for paid promotions, become editors and even eventually run for Executive Board positions.
But what if writing is not quite your style? Not to worry. The Anchor is always looking for those interested in photography, illustrators, comic artists and more. No matter what your niche might be, your talents will be valued in the media center and given the space to flourish.
Inquiries can be directed to editorinchief@anchorweb.org or those interested can contact The Anchor on Instagram. We are excited to see you at an upcoming meeting and for you to join our team.
