After a lengthy break, RIC athletes picked the books back up and kept plowing through the winter season. Here’s what happened this week in RIC Athletics.

Sunday, Monday. Tuesday and Thursday (Jan. 18, 19 and 20) did not have any games or events scheduled.
Wednesday, Jan. 21
Women’s basketball vs. Eastern Connecticut State University – W, 70-58
A 34-22 first-half start for the Anchorwomen set up the eventual 12-point win despite a competitive effort from Eastern Connecticut in the second half. First-year forward Eva Monahan led the Anchorwomen in scoring with a career-high 21 points on 10-for-15 shooting, while second-year guard Shalyn Smith contributed 18 points in the victory and was perfect at the free-throw line (7-for-7). Third-year guard Abby Wager corralled a career-high 17 rebounds and added four assists, three steals and a pair of blocks.
Men’s basketball vs Eastern Connecticut State University – W, 99-92
A late comeback effort from Eastern Connecticut State fell short as the Anchormen came out victorious in the high-scoring affair. Third-year guard/forward Xavier Mendez led RIC scorers with 27 points to go alongside 14 rebounds for the double-double. First-year guard Noe Bom missed only once as he contributed 20 points on 9-for-10 shooting. Third-year guard CJ Wilson dished out five assists and recorded two steals.
Friday, Jan. 23
Men & Women’s Track and Field @ Wheaton’s Lyon Invitational (Norton, MA) – 3rd place (men), 4th place (women)
In a seven-team meet, both sides of the track and field team had respectable finishes. For the men, first-year Marcos Ruiz Uben qualified for the New England Division III Championship thanks to a first-place finish in the 400m open. Fourth-year Brandon Mota finished second in the weight throw. For the women, second-year Bendu Kamara clinched her spot in the N.E. Div. III Championship with a fourth-place effort in the 60m. Fourth-year Haley Oliver had a first-place finish in the 800m and a second-place mark in the mile. First-year Naibel Noriega secured top marks in the 400m invite. The 4x400 mixed relay team (Noriega, first-year Maycol Reynoso, first-year Aaliyah Barbour-Chamble and second-year Jack McEntee) finished first in their event with a time of 3:45.78.
Saturday, Jan. 23
Wrestling @ Wildcat Open (Johnson and Wales University, Providence, R.I.) – Individual Meet, no scoring
Second-year Constantine Isaac went 2-2 at 157 lbs., with both wins coming off of technical falls. Fourth-years Dillon Carter (165 lbs.), Juan Rodriguez (184 lbs.) and first-year Kameron Fickes (141 lbs.) all went 1-2.
Swimming vs Plymouth State University and Keene State College (held at Plymouth State) – W vs Plymouth State, 145-117, L vs Keene State, 191-70
Fourth-year Morgan McCann earned top marks in both the 50-yard and 100-yard breaststroke and second-year Marina Pereira secured third in the 50-yard and 100-yard butterfly.
Women’s Basketball vs Plymouth State University – W, 76-31
The Panthers were suppressed to under ten points in three of the four quarters as the Anchorwomen cruised to victory. Third-year guard Abby Wager recorded a double-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. First-year forward Eva Monahan added 18 points and 11 rebounds in the conference win.
Men’s Basketball vs Plymouth State University – W, 83-53
The outcome was decided by halftime as the Anchormen rolled to a 42-15 start with the Panthers shooting 3-for-23 in the opening half. Third-year guard/forward Xavier Mendez led the way with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Fourth-year forward Tyriek Weeks and second-year guard Jalen Claude scored double-digits with 13 and 10 points respectively.
