RIC athletics recap: women’s tennis, golf teams back in the fray

Monday, April 6


Women’s golf @ Hartford Invitational (West Hartford, CT) – 5th of five, 477 (+197)


The 70-par course saw first-year Rylee Adams finish as the top golfer for the Anchorwomen, tying for 15th place with a score of 110 (+40). Third-year Mya Linchitz followed along with a 17th-place effort with a score of 113 (+43).

Men’s tennis vs Wentworth Institute of Technology – W, 6-1


A clearout of all three doubles matches clinched by the third doubles team (third-years Hajji Glover, Liam Berube) secured the opening point for the Anchormen. RIC claimed five of six singles contests, and the match was secured by second-year Ethan Clegg’s straight-set win at second singles.


Tuesday, April 7


Baseball @ Western Connecticut State University


Game one: L, 4-1

The Anchormen gave the Wolves their first Little East Conference win of the season. Fourth-year first baseman Daniel Cascio’s RBI in the seventh gave RIC their only run of game one. First-year pitcher Jace Wolfradt took the loss.


Game two: W, 7-3

The visitors rebounded for their first LEC win of the year to split with the host WestConn. A contested 3-3 affair entering the top of the ninth inning, the Anchormen registered four runs and shut down the Wolves’ offense at the bottom of the inning to take the win. First-year third baseman Jake Novak went 3-for-3 and had the game-winning run in the ninth. Third-year pitcher Jake Foster earned the win in a solid relief effort.


Wednesday, April 8


Baseball vs Wentworth Institute of Technology – W, 6-2


First-year Cam Laramee’s seven innings of relief pitching played a key factor as the freshman allowed only two runs on six hits, striking out eight. Second-year left fielder George was 3-for-4 with a run scored, a double and an RBI. Read more into the Anchormen’s third win of the year here.


Women’s lacrosse @ Eastern Connecticut State University – L, 19-4


Second-year Brie Macaruso found the back of the net twice in the defeat. She also claimed four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Second-year goalkeeper Abaigeal Estano made a season-high 14 saves in the loss.


Thursday, April 9


Women’s tennis vs Curry College – W, 7-0


The hosts extinguished the Colonels in their first game of spring action, conceding only two games in the entire session. Second-year Arianna De Thomas’s straight-set win at first singles clinched the overall sweep.


Baseball @ Babson College – W, 10-7


Rhode Island College finished up their weekday clashes with a 3-1 record, their victory against the Beavers the third straight for the Anchormen. First-year third baseman Jake Novak went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Third-year Jake Foster claimed the win in five innings of work with three strikeouts.

Friday, April 10


Men’s golf @ Elms Invitational (Chicopee, MA) – 2nd of six, team score 323 (+35)


Fourth-year Jasper Bruins Slot tied for second place with a personal score of 77 (+5) at the par-72 course in Southwick, Massachusetts. First-years Ryan Gervais and Brady Pongvongkeo finished inside the top ten with seventh and eighth place finishes, respectively.


Saturday, April 11


Track and field @ Ed Daniels Invitational (Manchester, NH) – Individual meet, no team scoring


Men: Second-year Jack McEntee moved up to No. 15 in the nation with his first-place and personal best effort in the 400m hurdles (53.71s). Third-year Andrew Frezza had a personal best in the 5,000m (15:23.07), finishing second in the meet. Classmate Enrique Edjang also had a personal best in hammer (54.51m). Fourth-year Loudon Chupas notched second in the javelin (55.49m), while second-year Owen Schenck had a fourth-place effort in the 800m (1:56.55).


Women: Fourth-year Haley Oliver claimed first in the 5,000m (17:31.42). Second-year Quiana Pezza had a fifth-place finish in the 200m (25.83s) and a seventh-place mark in the 100m final (12.65). First-year Maire Scanlon got third in the long jump in her personal best performance (5.21m). First-year Naibel Noriega placed fourth in the 200m (25.78s) and sixth in the 400m (58.72s). Second-year Taryn Reed notched ninth in the hammer with a personal best of 42.42m. 


Women’s lacrosse @ Plymouth State University – L, 19-5


Third-year midfielder Lily Nees had three goals with seven ground balls and four draw controls in the Little East Conference defeat Saturday. Second-year Abaigeal Estano saved 13 shots in the loss, with five ground balls picked up.


Softball vs Bridgewater State University


Game one: W, 8-1

After an opening run by Bridgewater State in the first, RIC handled scoring the rest of the way, punching in three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings of play in the victory. Fourth-year second baseman Noelle Simmons went 2-for-4 with two hits, a double, an RBI and three runs scored. First-year Mia Crudale improved to 10-1 on the year with seven K’s.


Game two: W, 12-0 (five innings)

On the day overall, the Anchorwomen outscored the visitors, 20-1, with a five-inning game in game two concluding the sweep. Simmons continued the hot batting, going 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Meanwhile, second-year Joey Meyer and third-year left fielder Melanie Earley each had three RBI in the game two win. Third-year Ashleigh von der Linden allowed just two hits and struck out three in the complete-game win. 


Baseball @ Eastern Connecticut State University


Game one: L, 6-4

Host Eastern Connecticut built up a 5-nothing lead in the first three innings. A three-run response in the sixth inning by the Anchormen cut the lead to two but were never able to complete the comeback as their three-game winning streak ended. First-year designated hitter Jace Wolfradt went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Third-year pitcher Casey Williams took the loss.


Game two: L, 2-1

RIC opened up the defensive battle with an RBI double from fourth-year right fielder CJ Almagno, but runs by the Warriors in the second and fifth innings put the Anchormen away as they were unable to score after. First-year Cameron Laramee was given the defeat pitching four innings.
