Spoilers for the 2024 release “Terrifer 3” to follow.

Last weekend “Terrifer 3” came out in theaters. It is the third movie in the Terrifer franchise. If you don’t know about this franchise, here is a quick rundown before you go see it. The franchise’s villain is Art the Clown, an animated, mute and sadistic clown dressed in a black and white costume. All three movies occur in a fictional small town called Miles County, New York. The first movie follows Victoria and her sister, Tara, on Halloween night as Art the Clown chases them down. Tara and many others are slaughtered by the end of the film. Before the police can get to him, Art the Clown shoots himself. The sole survivor is Victoria, who is severely disfigured after Art attacks her. The second movie takes place a year after the events of the first and follows Sienna and her brother, Jonathan. During the movie, Art kills over six people and injures Sienna and Jonathan. At the end of the movie, Sienna decapitates Art the Clown, but in the after-credits scene,Victoria births the head of Art the Clown.

If you are easily disgusted, scared, or dislike body horror you should not go see this movie. Like with the past movies in the franchise, there is excessive gore that left even me, a horror movie enthusiast, shaken and nauseous. Adults, teens, children and animals are killed in this movie. There are depictions of death by explosion, cannibalism, scalping, mutilation, decapitation and being frozen by liquid nitrogen before being hacked to death. There are reports of viewers vomiting  and having to leave the theater. Just know that you have been warned.

In my personal opinion, this was one of the scariest movies I have watched. As I was watching it I had to hide and peek over my sweatshirt. This is mainly because the film focused on the scary parts and hardly dwelled on the storyline. This is why the series is so great and also why it is so flawed. It satisfies the desire that horror movie fans have to ‘just get to the scary part!’ However, it also leaves the viewer confused about the plot and characters. I didn’t remember anything other than the gore from the first two movies. Another gripe I have with this film is that it takes place during Christmas, unlike the other films that take place during Halloween. I feel that the movie was supposed to come out during Christmas, but due to the lack of marketing, it doesn’t present itself as a Christmas horror movie. More people are likely to go to see a horror film around Halloween. Weirdly, the setting of Christmas in the movie made me excited for the winter. Mostly because I love the juxtaposition of the cheeriness of winter with the grisly murders.

“Terrifier 3” leaves its viewers shocked, disgusted and confused about how to react. If you are a horror fan that loves exaggerated gore, you will love this movie. However, if you go see it in theaters maybe skip the popcorn, as this movie isn’t the best to eat to. If you decide to snack, remember to clean up after yourself.
