Reading a scary story is personally one of my favorite ways to get into the Halloween spirit. RIC’s English Club is reintroducing its monthly Read-a-thon, in which a theme and related book is picked each month. October’s theme is horror-mystery and this month’s book is “Skeleton Creek” by Patrick Carman.
“Skeleton Creek” is about friends Ryan and Sarah who realize that something mysterious and scary is happening in their town of Skeleton Creek. They find that whatever is happening is occurring at the haunted and abandoned dredge in their town. One night while they were investigating, Ryan came too close to the unknown danger and was left in a near-death state. Two weeks after this incident, when the story begins, Ryan is out of the hospital and still recovering at home but he is not allowed to see Sarah. Ryan remains isolated while Sarah plunges back into the investigation, sending Ryan videos of what she finds while Ryan writes everything down.
“Skeleton Creek” is not just a book, making it especially unique. Throughout the story, there are links which lead to a website where you must put in a password. By doing so, there are different videos to watch that will help solve the mystery that is occurring. These are Sarah’s videos that she sends to Ryan. The videos serve as a good way to throw readers into the story and make them feel like they are a part of the action.
While reading “Skeleton Creek” I felt this exact way; like I was a part of the story, helping to solve the mystery as it was unfolding. Although this book was written for children ages 10-15 as a middle reader book, I feel as though people of all ages will enjoy reading this book. Whether you need help getting back into reading or want a unique reading and watching experience, I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves mystery and horror. Happy reading!
