RIC athletics weekly recap: Anchormen victorious in the ‘golf’ war, plus men soccer draws

Tuesday, Sept. 15

Mens golf @ Saints Invitational (Hingham, MA) –  1st of three, team score 328

Fourth-year Mike Decesare and second-year Brady Pongvongkeo tied for second place, carding 81 (+9). Fourth-year Max Nasser and second-year Ryan Gervais and claimed a fifth-place tie with an 83 (+11).  15 golfers participated in the par-72 course.

Womens tennis @ Salve Regina (Newport, RI) – L, 5-2

Third-year Haylie Peacock took down her first singles opponent, while classmate Arianna DeThomas finished her match with a win at second singles. The second doubles team of DeThomas and second-year Addison Hadlock won their match. The Anchorwomen take their first loss if the season against in-state rival Salve Regina. 

Womens volleyball vs Suffolk University – W, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-18)

The Anchorwomen comfortably achieved victory in two of three sets, with a tight second set seeing the hosts prevail with help of a 10-3 run following a service error from the Rams. Fourth-year Sarina Marines once again led the fray with 12 kills along with five service aces and five digs. Fourth-year libero Carolyn Bailey had a team-high nine digs.

Wednesday, Sept. 16

Mens golf @ Mitchell Invitational III (New London, CT) – 1st of three, team score 312

Second-year Ryan Gervais’ tied-for-first effort (75, +4) helped glide the Anchormen to their season-best performance and give the team back-to-back wins. Fourth-years Kyle Cullen (76, +5) and Max Nasser (80, +9) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. The course was a par-71 with 15 golfers participating.

Womens soccer @ Framingham State University (Framingham, MA) – W, 1-0

Fourth-year back Leah Saunders inserted the match-winning goal in the 57th minute off a free kick. Host Framingham State had a two-on-one opportunity shut down by fourth-year back Yassin Joof in the 81st minute. Fourth-year goalkeeper Nicole Nunes remains perfect with a 5-0 record on the season, recording seven saves in the winning effort.

Mens soccer @ Johnson & Wales University (Providence, RI) – T, 2-2

Second-years Julian Orellana and Kody Poplaski registered the two Anchormen goals in the tie. First-year Donovan Calle had the assist for Orellana to punch in the match’s first goal in the 22nd minute. Second-year midfielder Moise Augustin sent over a great assist pass to Poplaski to re-earn the lead in the 77th minute. First-year goalkeeper Jake Raymond made two saves to move to 0-1-1 on the season.

Thursday, Sept. 17

Womens tennis vs Emerson College – L, 7-0

Third-year Arianna DeThomas and second-year Addison Hadlock took the lone win at second doubles for the Anchorwomen.

Womens volleyball vs Salve Regina University – W, 3-0

The Anchorwomen cleaned up the in-state rival Seahawks easily holding the visitors to under 20 points in the first two sets. Third-year pin hitter Olivia Rollinson logged a team-leading 10 kills in the win, whilst fourth-year setter Yuleisy Alvelo had a match-high 18 assists. Fourth-year outside hitter Sarina Marines had 10 digs.

Saturday, Sept. 19

Cross country @ UMass Dartmouth Invitational (North Dartmouth, MA):

Men: 30th of 32 teams, team score 919

Fourth-year Andrew Frezza logged the top finish for the men with a 130th-place effort (27:22.33) in a sea of 240 runners across all three NCAA divisions.

Women: 32nd of 33 teams, team score 898

First-year Kristen Fountaine led the Anchorwomen fray with a 100th-place finish (24:18.20) amongst 240 other runners across all three NCAA divisions.

Womens soccer @ University of Massachusetts, Boston – L, 2-0

The Beacons landed two goals in net for the first half and would never look back as the visitors took their first loss of the season. Fourth-year forward Amber Almeida and first-year Isabella DiGioia each had shot opportunities. Fourth-year goalkeeper Nicole Nunes had two saves in her first loss of the year.

Womens volleyball vs Muhlenberg College, @ Emerson College (Boston, MA):

Muhlenberg: L, 2-3 (26-28, 25-15, 15-25, 25-15, 8-15)

It was a classic back-and-forth affair with the Anchorwomen on the losing end of the match, losing gas after a resounding 25-15 fourth-set bludgeoning over Muhlenberg with a 9-0 start in the fifth set from the Mules not helping. First-year middle hitter Aliyah Evora had a match-high six blocks.

Emerson: L, 3-0 (20-25, 20-25, 14-25)

An 18-15 lead for the Anchorwomen was thwarted with a 5-0 run on a pair of kills and aces to lose 25-20, losing the rest of the way in a sweep. Fourth-year setter Yuleisy Alvelo had 12 assists and six digs in defeat.

Mens soccer vs University of Massachusetts, Boston – T, 0-0

Fourth-year goalkeeper Elhadji Ndoye’s five-save performance was critical in extending the Anchormen’s unbeaten streak to four. The visitors outshot the hosts 13-7 but were never able to chip the game-winner in.

Womens tennis vs Bridgewater State University – W, 5-2

Third-year Haylie Peacock won both at first singles and doubles paired up with second-year Faith Owren. Third-year Emilia Houwers sealed the deal with a three-set win at third singles.
