RIC athletics weekly recap: a happy ‘RICtober’ for mens golf and soccer, womens tennis

Monday, Sept. 29

Womens soccer vs Lesley University – W, 2-1
A scoreless first half erupted into a fiery second as the visiting Lynx punched in a goal just a minute into the second half. Second-year midfielder Sarah Pimentel and the Anchorwomen responded just moments later in the 50th minute to equalize the affair. Third-year midfielder Talia Cost punched in the match-deciding goal, and her first career goal, in the 67th minute, thanks to key connections with third-year forward Caitlyn Terceiro and second-year midfielder Bryn Williams. Fourth-year goalkeeper Nicole Nunes moved to 7-2 on the year with a two-save performance.
Tuesday, Sept. 30
Mens golf @ Bison Invitational – 2nd of six, team score 321 (+33)
Fourth-years Mike Decesare and Max Nasser each carded a 79 (+7) in a third-place tie. Second-year Ryan Gervais’ score of 80 (+8) landed him seventh in the field of 29 golfers at the par-72 course.
Womens tennis @ Western Connecticut State University – W, 7-0
The Anchorwomen fielded a dominant squad in Danbury, headlined by third-years Haylie Peacock and Arianna De Thomas’s first and second singles wins, respectively. A third doubles victory by fourth-years Ivy Par and Isabella Ba was the highlight in doubles action.
Wednesday, Sept. 31
Womens soccer @ Salve Regina University – L, 4-1
Fourth-year midfielder Rylan Tinjum scored her second goal of the campaign to prevent a shutout for the Seahawks in the 86th minute. Fourth-year goalkeeper Nicole Nunes had nine saves in the loss.
Mens soccer vs Salve Regina University – T, 1-1
The mens soccer team had a decently fairer time at home base, holding the visitors to just one goal in the draw. Second-year midfielder Randy Vang punched in his first career goal to open up scoring in the 21st minute. Salve tied up the affair with a goal of their own in the 40th minute. First-year goalkeeper Jake Raymond made a save in the tie coming from a crucial stop in the 22nd minute on a penalty kick.
Womens volleyball @ Emmanuel College – L, 3-1 (24-26, 26-24, 12-25, 20-25)
A competitive first two sets cratered into an ugly third set in which momentum could not be regained for the Anchorwomen in the fourth set. Fourth-year setter Grace Luchka notched 17 assists, five digs and two aces in the loss.
Thurs, Oct. 1
Mens golf vs RIC Fall Invitational – first of four, team score 319
Fourth-year Kyle Cullen led the pack for the Anchormen’s successful fall season with a score of 77 (+5) to tie for first. Classmate Max Nasser followed up with a third-place mark of 78 (+6), while second-year Nicholas Fiori had an 80 (+8) to place fourth on the par-72 course.
Womens tennis vs Vermont State University Castleton – W, 7-0
Second-year Addison Hadlock highlighted the sweep over the Spartans with a two-hour straight-set victory over her opponent at fifth singles. Third-year Haylie Peacock clinched the series with a first singles trouncing.
Womens volleyball vs Massachusetts Maritime Academy – W, 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-11)
The Anchorwomen evened their record and halted a five-match skid with a shutout performance vs Mass Maritime. Fourth-year setter Yuleisy Alvelo earned a match-high six service aces, while third-year Daniella Escudero stepped into the starting lineup as a libero and led defensively with eight digs.
Friday, Oct. 2
Mens soccer @ Framingham State University – W, 2-1
The visitors were prepared in their uncommon Friday night matchup in a win that was etched in stone by fourth-year back Alijah Nunes’ game-winner in the 85th minute. After a ninth-minute goal by Framingham State, RIC responded in the 44th minute with third-year defender Ace Flores finding the back of the net. Fourth-year Elhadji Ndoye made four saves in the second half to help earn the win.
Saturday, Oct. 3
Cross country @ Keene State Invitational:
Men: 26th of 27
First-year Jahmel Rodrigues finished 177th in a field of 267 runners with a time of 28:53.7.
Women: 24th of 27, team score 730
First-year Kristen Fountaine finished 86th in a field of 244 runners with a time of 24:23.8.
Womens volleyball @ University of Massachusetts, Boston – L, 3-2 (20-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-22, 12-15)
RIC endured another five-set contest but fell short again of winning. Fourth-year Sarina Marines notched 15 kills, five digs and four service aces in the defeat.
Womens soccer @ Roger Williams University – L, 2-0
Fourth-year Nicole Nunes made five saves in net to close out their road trip across the state. First-year Isabella DiGioia and third-year Brooklyn Marinelli had the only shot attempts for the visitors.
Womens tennis @ University of Southern Maine – W, 7-0
RIC won all but just one lone match to easily down the Huskies. Third-year Emilia Houwers claimed third singles to clinch the overall victory and continue their undefeated streak in Little East play.
