Rhode Island College is committed to supporting student well-being and academic success and Learning for Life is just one example. Learning for Life allows students to work with a navigator to assist with identifying barriers and bridging the gap between these barriers and education. One important way this is accomplished is through the Learning for Life Food Pantry.

Established in 2016, the decision to establish a food pantry stems from a growing awareness of food insecurity among college students nationwide. According to a campus-wide survey conducted in 2019, 33% of students indicated they were experiencing financial hardships related to obtaining food.

The food pantry is located in Building #3, the Financial Aid building, and offers a range of non-perishable items as well as some toiletries. Students will need to show their student ID and can access the pantry discreetly and at no cost. This service is designed to be both supportive and respectful of student privacy, and Learning for Life is committed to protecting your privacy.

In addition to providing food, the pantry will host regular workshops on nutrition, budgeting and meal preparation to empower students with knowledge and skills that extend beyond their time at RIC. The center is also collaborating with local community organizations and food banks to ensure a steady supply of resources.

The launch of the food pantry has garnered widespread support from the RIC community over the years. Faculty, staff and students have rallied to contribute to the pantry’s stock through donations and fundraisers. Several student organizations have also stepped up to volunteer, further embedding the food pantry into the fabric of campus life.

As the Learning for Life Center moves forward with its services, it will continue to monitor and adapt the service based on student feedback and evolving needs. The center remains committed to its mission of enhancing student success through holistic support and resources.

For more information about the Learning for Life Center, its resources and food pantry, students and RIC community members can visit Learning 4 Life | Rhode Island College (ric.edu). Learning for Life can also be emailed at lflc@ric.edu, or contacted by phone at 401-456-6320. A donation link can be found on their website for those interested in contributing to the food pantry. Students with work/study financial aid awards are also encouraged to apply to fulfill their work/study requirements.
