Anchormen Golf capture win at Emmanuel Invitational

RIC’s golf team started their season at the Warrior Invitational. The Anchormen competed against the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors, who hosted the event, and the Westfield State Owls. The Invitational is played at Windham Golf Course, which measures in at 6,435 yards and is a 70 par. A par in golf is the expected number of shots needed to complete a hole and each hole has a par and adding the expected number of shots per hole will give you the 18 hole total.


The Anchormen struggled during this Invitational, shooting a combined team score of 326 shots from their five players and came in third out of the three teams. The Warriors shot a combined team score of 289 to come in first and the Owls came in second place with a combined team score of 315. Jesper Bruin Slot led the Anchormen with a score of 76 to finish sixth place among individuals, with Will Niles following close behind with a score of 78 to finish tied for seventh individually. Shane Mello and Cameron Mello, who are brothers, shot an 85 and 87 respectively for RIC, and Dylan James finished with a score of 100.


RIC then traveled up to Boston to take part in the Emmanuel Invitational on Sept. 20. The Invitational was played at the William J Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park, with a course distance of 6,609 yards with a par of 72. The Anchormen took part in the Invitational against Elms College, Mitchell College and Emmanuel College. RIC took home first place with a combined team score of 314, with Elms finishing second with a score of 331. Mitchell College finished third with a score of 332 and Emmanuel College finished fourth with a team score of 337. Niles and Slot both finished with a score of 76, allowing them to claim medalist honors and a share of first place individually. Cameron Mello came in eighth place with a score of 80, while Shane Mello tied for tenth shooting an 82. James finished with a score of 108 and placed twentieth.


Then RIC traveled to Norwich Golf Course to take part in the Rose City Invitational hosted by Eastern Connecticut. Seven teams would take part in the action at Norwich Golf Course, which has a course par of 71 and measures in at 6,228 yards.


The Anchormen would find themselves in third place at the end of day one with Bruin Slot sitting at 75 shots and in fourth place individually. Day two saw the Anchormen finish in fifth place with a combined two day shot total of 653. Bruin Slot led the team with a two day score of 159 strokes and Niles close behind finishing with 161 strokes over the two days. Nate Chhim finished with 166 total strokes, while Shane Mello and Cameron Mello shot a 167 and 173 respectively.


RIC has their next match against Roger Williams on Sept. 28 at Valley Country Club in Warwick.
