PROVIDENCE, R.I., — Class Elections are on October 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the class of 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Students will have the opportunity to vote for their graduating class’ President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. These positions will be responsible for planning activities and events for their graduating class.
Those interested had the opportunity to declare their candidacy by signing up in the Student Community Government (SCG) office located in Student Union office 401 by October 5 at 5 p.m.
Voting, which will be done electronically, is taking place at the Donovan Dining Center in front of the SCG Information Center on the first floor.
For reference, these positions are completely separate from the SCG Executive Board and Parliament Representatives. The process of becoming a Parliament Representative is different. Instead of being elected, one would need to fill out a petition and receive 25 signatures by students on the campus. After, the petition would be submitted to SCG and go through two stages of validation from their elections commission. When the validation process is complete, that person becomes an at-large Parliament Representative, simultaneously becoming eligible to run for an executive board position if they so choose. They don’t have an affiliation either, meaning they are just a representative of the parliament.
The Parliament Representatives and Executive Board are who can be seen in the bi-weekly meetings on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.
As for the elections, the winners will be who represents the class’ best interests moving forward. With all things considered, those in the class of 2022 through 2025 have a chance to elect who they believe will be best to serve their class. Simply put, there are a number of factors that are increasing the importance of voting in this election.
SCG cancelled their expected parliament meeting for September 29 to spread the word about class elections. Elections are here with no urgent updates from administration to the student body, just SCG trying their best.
