As I said last week, many of us don’t have the money to go away for Spring Break. So what can you do around Rhode Island for Spring Break? Even with Rhode Island being the smallest state, it’s full of fun and interesting things to do.
Indoor Mini Golf – Monster Mini Golf located in Warwick, down the street from the Warwick Mall, is a great way to spend the afternoon. The whole building is lit by backlights giving the mini-golf experience a different feel. It’s also cheap. A round of mini golf is only $7.50, but if you flash your student ID, it only costs $5.50! After 18 holes of mini golf, grab some quarters and play a few of their arcade games. Monster Golf is open Wed. – Thurs., 2 – 9 pm, Friday 2 – 10 p.m., Sat. noon to 10, Sun. noon to 8 and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Lazer Gate – Even though Lazer Gate is not in Rhode Island, it is worth the drive to Fall River, Mass. Every day, Lazer Gate has different specials, for example: Friday is “Midnight Madness” – play as many games from 8 p.m. to midnight for only $17; Tuesday you can play all day for $15; and if you have a group of six or more on Mondays, all games are half price ($3.50 per person). In between games, you can sip on a slushy and play some arcade games like Skeeball and Deal or No Deal. Also, Lazer Gate now has mini golf just like Monster Golf. Gate Golf costs about $7 per round, but it isn’t up to par as Monster Golf.
Twin River – You are probably thinking why I am putting this on the list, but hey, there is nothing like walking in with $5 and walking out with $60. Leave the plastic credit cards at home and only bring a $5 bill. This way you don’t get overboard and go into debt gambling away. And you never know, lady luck could be on your side and you win big.
WaterFire – Just announced, Friday, March 19, with the help of Dunkin’ Donuts, there will be lighting in the Basin at Waterplace Park. Because it was just announced, there aren’t many details about it, but if you like WaterFire, stay tuned for details about this lighting on their Web site at www.waterfire.org.
Thayer Street – If it’s a nice day, take a stroll down Thayer Street. Look through the different shops, enjoy a slice of pizza at Nice Slice, and sip on tea at TeaLuxe. You never know you could bump into Hermione Granger.
United Skates of America – Head down to East Providence and spend the afternoon roller-skating. Wednesday and Friday is all-you-can-eat pizza night from 6 – 8:30 p.m. and 7 – 9:30 p.m., respectively. Most skate sessions cost between $6 and $7. If you don’t own a pair of skates, you can rent a pair. Roller skates cost $2.50, and roller blades are $1 more. Also at United Skates, there are plenty of old-school arcade games and games to win crazy amounts of tickets. And there is laser tag, rock climbing and food.
Overall, staying home for Spring Break can be boring, but when you think about it, there is something to do in our small state. Plus, you save so much money when you stay in Rhode Island. This is just a small list of what you can do, but the possibilities are endless.
