Walking into Zeta Xi Delta's mandatory informational meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 24, the energy level was high and everyone was nervous. Though excitement was in the air as Zeta Xi Delta made the young women feel welcomed.
Zeta Xi Delta is a new sorority that was started in the fall of 2007. The sorority was founded by Desiree Jones who is a junior and majoring in technical Theatre with an emphasis on costume design. The goal of the sorority is to offer a sisterhood to young women and foster personal growth through friendship, philanthropy, and excellence in academics.
"The girls in this sorority never fail to amaze me with their big hearts and great personalities," Jones said.
The President of the sorority, Nikhol Bentley, is a junior here at Rhode Island College. She is currently majoring in elementary education with a concentration in Mathematics pursuing a middle school endorsement. As a very ambitious young woman, Nikhol Bentley put forth numerous ideas on how to better the Greek life on campus. This seems to be what put her over the top as the sorority's president.
Overall, members of the sorority were quite friendly and willing to help out those in attendance any way they could. They seek girls of merit and are not so concerned with numbers. "If you all have the qualities of a Zeta Xi Delta then you all may become Zeta Xi Delta. We seek quality, not quantity," Bentley said.
Zeta Xi Delta's primary focus is Breast Cancer Research. They plan to participate in the "Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk" on Oct. 19 at Roger William's Park. What's more, they intend to walk under the name "Team Nixon" in honor of their sorority's advisor, Dr. Madeline Nixon, who is a breast cancer survivor. The sorority also intends to pursue an aggressive fundraising campaign to contribute to Breast Cancer Research.
