Haunted America: The Stanley Hotel

The Stanley Hotel, located in Estes Park, Colo., has nearly a century of history. The hotel was also the inspiration for the Overlook Hotel, the setting for Stephen King's masterpiece The Shining. It has also hosted some famous names such as Stephen King, Theodore Roosevelt, and even the Emperor and Empress of Japan. But the Stanley may be hosting more than just guests. It has been the site of numerous reports of supposed hauntings.

The Stanley was built in 1909 by Freelan O. Stanley, inventor of the Stanley Steamer automobile, after coming to Estes Park when he came down with tuberculosis. When he found that the town was economically poor, and with the amazing view of the Rockies, he decided to have the hotel built using his connections he had made from the success of the Steamer. He also had a new road built into the town. To help christen it, he had the first visitors come in on steamers. In 1940, the year he died, he finished having a sewer, water, and power company developed for the town. Since then, the hotel had become a major success.

The hotel still stands and is still in operation today.

Many reports have come from the guests of the hotel that they had seen strange images and had unexplainable things happen to them. Some believe that F. O. Stanley haunts the hotel himself. He has been seen most often in the lobby and the Billiards room, which was his favorite room when he was alive. He has also been seen in the bar but quickly disappears before anyone can get a better look.

It is also believed that F.O.'s wife Flora haunts the hotel as well. When she was in the hotel, she used to entertain the guests by playing piano in the music room. Though there have been no actual sightings of her, the keys of the piano have been seen by several guests to be moving by themselves.

Guests have also reported hearing children playing in the hallway when no children were present, one couple even checking out because of the noise. Various employees have reported hearing voices when no one was around and seeing impressions in beds in rooms where no guests have stayed in for awhile. One guest claimed to have recorded a faded image of a man in a cowboy hat in his room, standing in front of the window. It lasted for a few minutes and then faded away. Another incident occurred where a guest attending her sister's wedding wrote "REDRUM" on a mirror with lipstick in her sister and her groom-to-be's room a joke. Later, as she was walking down the grand staircase to the lobby, she felt someone shove her and she fell down the stairs. After being helped up, she looked to see who shoved her, but no one was around to have done so.

Many strange events seem to take place in the Stanley Hotel for sure. Some are certainly less explainable than others. Why people believe they see the Stanleys has no reasonable explanation. Noises that guests and employees hear could be the creaking of heaters that they think might be ghosts, or the shifting of the pine wood that some of the hotel is made from. Voices that they hear could be echoing through the floors and walls from other rooms. That could account for the children that are heard as well. Or they could actually be children that hide when someone tells them to stop or keep it down. The guest who recorded the ghost wearing the cowboy hat would be more reliable if he showed this recording rather than say he did. And the girl who claimed to be shoved could very well have lied. After all, she was in the process of pulling a prank when it happened.

The Stanley Hotel has managed to stand as the very essence of the haunted hotel story, even before Stephen King used it for inspiration. It has also been visited by the T.A.P.S team, aka the Ghost Hunters on the SciFi channel. But does the Stanley still have guests that have not checked out?

My mother has had such a crazy experiance at the Stanley Hotel that she will never go into the building again. She stayed on the 3rd floor which is where all the men stayed and women were not allowed on. The frist night she could tell a man was in the closet but didnt say anything because she believed that she was just imagining it since she was at the Stanley. The next day they went on the ghost tour and she saw a locked doorhandle twisting and jiggling and only the tour guide and herself say it occur. That night something was in the bed with her and poked her in the back repeatedly all night. She rushed home but she was so afraid that she had brought something to the house that she had a priest come and bless the house multiple times. My aunt and myself and planning to go there next year with each other and go on the ghost tours. Like I said, this scared my mother out of her wits and she has never had such and experiance in her life.

You're right, the Stanley Hotel does not have anything to do with the movie "The Shining" starring Jack Nicholson. This hotel was, however, the original inspiration for Stephen King's novel of the same name, though he did NOT actually write the novel at the hotel. Eighteen years after the first movie adaptation of "The Shining" was made by Kubrick, King produced another version with his own name attached to it. This movie was in fact filmed at the Stanley Hotel. Get your facts straight before you accuse people of misrepresentation.

We just were at the Stanley Hotel a couple of days ago. The Hotel has nothing to do with the movie, "The Shining," starring Jack Nicholson. Stephen King spent one night in the hotel and went back to Boulder and finished his book. Not one frame of the movie was filmed at this hotel. The hotel is a fine place to visit but if you think you are going to see and/or hear about the movie don't waste your time.
We could have spent the whole day in Rocky Mt. National Park rather than waste our vacation time on something that is so misleading.
We felt like it was nothing more than a tourist trap making money on misrepresentation!

I found out in April that I had Lukemia. My wife and I were scheduled to visit Estes Park in July. We decided to go in May because of the treatments that I would have to go through. We visited the Stanley and the end of our stay in Estes. We went on the tour and we captured some orb's on our camera. I was still skeptical of this until we came to room #418. The guide said they used this room for the sick children on this floor. He explained that if anyone had an illness and step inside this room they would feel something. I was thinking "yea right, ok". When I stepped into this room I instantly felt sick to my stomach. I stayed inside for about two minutes and then had to remove my self from the room. As soon as I stepped out into the hall way the illness went away. After a few more minutes I stepped back into the room and the same symptoms came back and then again left the room upon I felt fine again. To feel what I felt, I do believe some paranormal exists in that hotel. It was a fun experience.

A friend and I just returned from a road trip to celebrate our graduation from nursing school. We stayed one night at the Stanley Hotel. We decided to stay there after seeing the hotel on a show on the Travel Channel. Before we left, my boyfriend gave me an EMF detector as a gift, kind of as a joke since we were staying at the Stanley. We're not exactly paranormal investigators. Well, we checked into our room, #414, and thought we'd put the EMF detector to use and find out what the baseline reading was for the room. In every area of our room, the reading was between 0-1, except at the ceiling fan, which gave us a reading of 2 and by the alarm clock, which gave us a reading of 4. After that, we went on one of the ghost tours. During the tour, our tour guide explained how the 4th fllor was where all the nannies and children stayed and how people sometimes leave candy out for the ghost children, which we thought was hysterical. After the tour, we went to dinner and stopped at Safeway to buy candy for the ghost children. (Crazy, right?) We got back to the hotel and we put candy in the closet of our room and under the bed, all the while talking out loud to the ghosts and laughing hysterically about how crazy we must be for buying candy for ghost children. (We are normal and sane people... we realize that this sounds psychotic.) After we put the candy out, we picked up the EMF detector and the reading was 14!!! We couldn't believe it! We walked around the room and it would go back to a reading between 0-1, but in one area by the bed, it was 14! It stayed there consistently for about two minutes. Then, someone way down the hall left their room and was talking loudly and as soon as their door slammed, the reading was instantly at 0. It was as if whatever was there was frightened and left as soon as the door slammed. We were shocked and amazed.

Later that night (about 1am) we were sitting on the floor in the hallway having no luck at having another odd experience. A couple came and seemed to be checking into their room a couple of rooms to our left (#404?). As they were trying to open their door, I smelled a very strong, floral scent, like perfume. I said out loud to me friend, "Do you smell them? Those people smell really good". She said that she didn't smell anything. A few minutes later, the couple walked right past us since they apparently had also rented room #418, a couple of rooms to our right. They had a bunch of equipment and we realized that they were serious paranormal investigators who must have been there to investigate #418 and sleep in #404. It occured to me when they walked right past me that I could not smell the perfume even though I had when they were much further away, but I didn't think much of it. We sat there for a little while longer, not having much luck, but hearing the couple in #418 set up their equipment and alarms on their devices beeping. They were hard core. :) We got up to go back to our room and as we were passing the room they were in, the lady in there shouted to us that we were welsome to come in a take pictures if we wnated to, which of course we did since this was supposedly one of the most haunted rooms of all. When we went in, the lady told us that when they first came in the room, it surprised her how strongly it smelled like perfume and when she turned on her EMF detector, it was getting a very high reading on the bed (we did hear it's beeping when they first went in there. She said that it was weird because the smell quickly went away and now the EMF detector, still on and laying on the bed, wasn't picking anything up. And there was definitely no perfume smell in the room that I could smell. My friend totally freaked. I seriously think I smelled a ghost in the hallway. Is that even possible? I smelled it and it was gone in an instant, and now this lady smelled it before it quickly disappeared. I was so glad I said that I smelled it out loud in the hallway to my friend or she would never have believed me.

Sorry this was sooo long, but I just wanted to share my Stanley experience. I went there not thinking I would see anything, but left thinking that there is definitely something going on there. If anyone is a skeptic about the Stanley (I know I was), I would just say that you should go see for yourself. I think you will change your mind after staying there.

To answer the question, no one has ever died in the hotel. There is a lot of history behind the place the could cause some spirits to want to stay there (such as Lord Dunraven who haunts the 4th floor and Mrs. Wilson who frequants room 217). A large part of the reason the hotel is haunted is that it is built on top of a limestone depoist. Limestone holds energy like a big battery and allows spirits the energy needed to show up. I can answer just about any question regarding the Stanley, you just have to ask.

I stayed in room 206 not too long ago - end of June......about 9:30 or 10:00 I waw crawling into bed, pulled the covers up and rolled over on my right side to go to sleep. I had just shut my eyes when a male voice whispered urgently in my left ear :GET UP!!"...needless to say I couldn't get up - even if I wanted to! I was thrilled to have an experience there even as scary as it was! I hope to go back soon and stay on the 4th floor - that would be a REAL experience to remember!

My aunt and uncle and I all stayed at the Stanley in March 09. We booked rooms 401 and 418 which we were told were the most haunted. My uncle slept alone in 418 and was able to debunk a lot of spooky noises and such. He swears every time the someone ran water in the rooms around him the hissing noises and pipes banging were from the running water.

In 401 is where I stayed with my aunt and the only unexplained event was the window flying open. It was a windy day, but we were still not able to explain. We are staying in those rooms again in August 09 and maybe this time we will get some evidence! I hope so!

i was just at the stanly hotel a few daysa go and we took the ghost tour. we were told that on the 4th floor, the nannies and children would stay, while the parents stayed on the lower floors. the tour guide told us that sometimes you can hear small children laughing and playing in the halls on the 4th floor. my nieces, various ages, went down the hallway singing, and trying to get the "ghost" children to come out and play. i had my digital camera ready to take the picture when we all looked at the camera screen and saw three purple orbs on the screen with the children. i went to snap the shot and the flash came on, which we all saw, but no picture appeared on my camera. i tried to take another picture, and the camera turned off by itself. i once again tried to take a picture a third time, and the same thing happened as the first time - flash and no picture. i thought maybe my memory card was full but when i checked my camera, i still had over 500 pictures i could take. i also checked the battery level and it was fully charged. after we left the hallway, i tried to take a picture of my nieces, and everything worked fine and i got a great picture of them on my camera. strange....i believe that the stanley is haunted. also if you are planning to stay at the stanley, remember it is 100 years old and no central air conditioning. there are ceiling fans in each room and the windows do open but it is very hot in the hotel. this used to be a seaonal hotel from june 1 to the end of september and baseboard heat was just added during the late 80's. there are a number of great modern hotels in the area if you want ac. if you decide to stay at the stanley, book room 217 - this is the most expensive but it is also one of the most haunted and the room that stephen king stayed in to write the "shining". also room 401 is also very haunted with kids singing in the closet.

Our family stayed at the Stanley, Labor Day Weekend, 2008 and ALSO captured a pic that has been deemed paranormal, by two separate paranormal investigators. Judge for yourself. The filtered images (closeup and full frame) can be located at one of the paranormal investigator's websites. google: paranormal investigations "visitor submitted evidence" ... click on "visitor submitted evidence" and see our capture. Photo experts from CA also deemed the shots paranormal. For those who do not believe, this pic will at least give you "pause" to reflect...

A group of us rented a cabin in Estes Park for last year's Valentine's Day weekend. We took the tour on the day we left to come home. When we got home, we were flipping through the photos on all of our digital cameras, and on our friend's camera in a photo taken in the Billiard room, there was a very discernible face in the mirror above the fireplace that did not belong to anyone in the room.

I am a huge fan of Stephen King and Ghost Hunters, and I challenge the interested skeptics to step foot in the Stanley Hotel. Visit room 217 or 418 and see if you yourself are not visited as well...:)

I stayed at the hotel last night, not knowing about the haunted history, but my first room (210) was cold and the even repairs to the radient heaters (which was hot) and space heaters did nothing to the temperature in the room. I also had an uneasy feeling. I heard multiple door slams and other wierd sounds. After 4 hours of this I changed rooms and instantly felt fine. There may be normal explanations, it is an old hotel, but my experience did not feel normal.

Being a paranormal researcher myself, I can honestly say; if your looking for a true adventure.....The Stanley is the way to go. It's a ghost hunters dream and a thrill seekers paradise.
